has never been any other choice for me, and I feel that if administrators, and the community as a whole, also set these expectations from a young age, all students would feel as I do. We need to recognize the triumph in our communities and the potential for greatness within ourselves in order to succeed. I strongly believe in being involved both in my school and my community, so I am a member of the National Hispanic Institute. I hold the National Hispanic Institute very close to my heart because I consider my peers almost family members. However, when I went to my first meeting, it was quite the opposite. I felt like an outsider because I was the only participant from my school, actually my entire area, and one of the few that attended public school. All their parents had degrees, and I was never ashamed of who I was or my background, but I felt so different. As a freshman in high school, I experienced for the first time in my life what it was like to interact with people outside of my immediate area, ethnicity, and economic situation. Although most of the students were hispanic, many did not necessarily identify as such. Most of them didn't speak spanish or practice many of the traditions common in our culture, or had radically different upbringings. Nobody ever acted differently toward me, but I feel that I judged myself harshly to prove to myself that I could compete with the other students.
