This shirt originated from Sancti Spiritus, Cuba and used to be called the Guayabana. The Guayabera stopped being produced in Cuba due to their economy and continued in Merida, Yacatan. The Guayabera shirt was so popular that even Luis Echeverría Álvarez, President of Mexico from 1970 to 1976, instituted it as one of his official pieces of clothing (Mentado, “El verdadero origen de la Guayabera”, Par. 4). The "huipil" is a traditional, square-cut blouse that is hand-woven and heavily decorated with embroidered designs and worn by Maya women. The garment is sometimes embellished around the neck, in the shape of a cross. El Rebozo is a feminine piece of clothing traditionally used by indigenous Mexican women. El Rebozo is a long and flat garment with a rectangular shape, terminated at each end with knots and fringes. They are made with different materials according to their use, like for everyday or Gala. They can be made out of cotton, wool, or silk, which varies their cost. The origin of the Rebozo is ambiguous due to the fact that there are many theories claiming its origin. Another one says that it was inspired by Spaniards blankets, and another claims that it is a combination of an indigenous cloak and a rectangular canvas with embroidery made using a different material. There are documents that prove its existence from 1555 (Córdova, par. 4). It was not until the 18th century that the rebozo became a common…

It would be way to overwhelming for me.      To fight crime, Peter needs a costume and a mask of some sort to hide his…

The costumes in the store were geared towards children and marketers knew that the signs would grab attention by being surrounded by…

idea of taking a more liberal approach to the costume designs. She also wanted to put a modern spin on all aspects of the show (costuming included). In order to dress Amanda in a way that would fit this vision, I made her clothes classy, elegant, and a tad revealing, albeit cheaply made. All of her outfits are the less expensive knockoffs of upper class clothes. I drew inspiration from old Hollywood dresses, and then found pictures of what appears to be cheaper made versions. In the play, it is…

I’m Nobody’s Puppet My parents had no problem changing the strings, makeup, and costumes whenever they forced me to dance as their puppet to entertain their audience. I had to be quiet and let them lead, smiling, speaking, and laughing on cue. They even strung the corners of my lips, stretching them wide and painful, censoring my emotions. I had two appearances in my puppeteer form: one as the perfect serene Indonesian Muslim, and the other a humble Peruvian Catholic. My parents were both…
