the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Courthouse (Faussett & Blinder, 2015). The flag had been flying in South Carolina since 1962 over the state courthouse. It was met with mixed emotions but was a direct result of the massacre at the Emanuel A.M.E. Church. Another controversy that has been ignited because of the massacre is happening in Memphis, Tennessee. The Memphis City Council has begun discussions of attempting to remove the statue of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest from the Health Sciences Park (Poe, 2015). Forrest was a Confederate general and led troops for the South. He has been incorrectly identified as the leader of the Ku Klux Klan. There have even been discussions previously of renaming the park to honor Ida B. Wells, a civil rights advocate (Maki, 2013). This process would involve digging his and his wife’s graves and relocating them to a less visible area and bringing down the statue. This simply cannot stand. There is no reason to desecrate the graves and honor of General Forrest. He fought hard for his country and deserves to be remembered for that. While the Civil War was fought mainly over the issue of slavery, removing any icons of that time will let people forget about it, and that cannot happen.
