rescue a stranger; the father of a teenaged daughter and her mother, whom Robbie, my son, and his wife, Kara, had come across only minutes ago. I was immediately thrown back to this perilous August 2012 crisis in my kids early married life; pondering how this horrifying event has affected them as I considered what circumstances produce a hero while reading "Of Altruism, Heroism and Nature’s Gifts in the Face of Terror”, a compelling and thought provoking article written by Natalie Angier during the first week and emotionally raw days of 9-11 (1). I asked Rob and Kara if they’d be comfortable recalling that August afternoon four years ago so I could write a small comparison piece alongside Angier’s altruistic perspective and findings regarding human nature and other species. They both were very gracious and agreed to relive that afternoon; thanking me for asking for their permission, as this remains a painful memory for them both and they do not talk about it but more than understand its value.…

Natalie Angier’s article in the New York Times assesses how society’s definition of the American family has changed. Three issues she raises are best explained by three examples she uses: the haves and the have-nots, gayby boom, and the pay-check mommy. One of Angier’s first examples in the article is told through statistics. The numbers show many people prefer the idea of marriage and children. She cites an informal sample of Americans who share their thoughts of love, kids, and mom when they…

The chapter “Thinking Scientifically,” from Natalie Angier's book, The Canon, analyzes the advantages of the application of scientific processes in daily life. This is first done through a description of science as a dynamic state of mind, rather than a list of facts to be memorized and regurgitated. In what amounts to a minor attack on the way science is regularly taught, Angier quotes David Stevenson, saying “Many teachers who don't have a deep appreciation of science present it as a set of…
