When creating the sculpture, the artists, Myron, focused on the rhythm, composition, and symmetry during his work. The Sleeping Satyr was created during the Hellenistic period and was acquired in Rome by Barberini, who was a nephew of Pope Urban VIII. The artwork was found in Hadrian’s Mausoleum, but the satyr’s right leg and left arm were missing. Scholar suggests that this is because besieged Romans threw statues at the Gothics in 537 B.C.E, which may have been the cause of the limbs falling off. Fortunately, these body parts were restored by artists such as Bernini and the sculpture became extremely coveted. In Myron’s statue, Diskobolos (Discus Thrower), a marble man is seen with his left arm raised as if he is about to swing his arm back down and throw the discus in his hand. Since the artwork is a little over five feet tall, it has an intimate scale that capture the viewer’s attention because it is around the height of an actual human. Myron captured the climax of the man’s motion of throwing the discus, which increases the intensity of the sculpture’s context.
