In 1999, Tim Westergren and two of his friends launched a company out of San Francisco called Savage Beast, which would later become Pandora (Pozen & Rosenfeld, 2009). Pandora was powered by the Music Genome Project. The Music Genome Project is a music discovery engine, and each song in the project’s library was analyzed by Pandora employees (Pozen & Rosenfeld, 2009). Pandora spent time and money building up their musical library in the project so that customers were enabled to listen to songs that were similar in style. In the beginning, Westergren licensed the Music Genome Project to other music stores, however this method of business did not generate enough profit. Pandora was then forced to come up with another strategy. This is when the…

science community is always on the brink of something big. And the next big thing might be designer babies. Deeper and more profound exploration into cells and genetics have allowed for the possibility of designer babies to emerge. Before creating designer babies was even an idea, scientists were first working towards sequencing the human genome. By sequencing the human genome, scientists will be able to identify which nucleotide sequences code for which genes. Sequencing the human genome has…

Nearly one-fifth of the human genome is privately owned (Crichton 441). Gene patenting is a relatively new concept and controversial one at that. Many scholars have very strong opinions on this topic, two of these scholars being: Harvard graduate and novelist Michael Crichton and a former resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and staff economist John E. Calfee. Both scholars have written extremely compelling essays on the topic. Crichton’s essay “Patenting Life”, gives an…

At one point in the universe’s long and ongoing history, evolution began with the smallest of sea creatures. Since then, there have been many waves of evolution, and with genetic engineering, humankind will be able to remain adjustable to lifestyle and environmental changes. It may potentially be the peak of the “fittest” that Darwin proposed in 1869. Genetic engineering is not a science fiction fantasy anymore either- is it legitimate and it is growing. Will you grow and adapt with genetic…

In the 1990’s, a new method of DNA sequencing was emerging. This method was called Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). These methods are known to be more accurate, efficient, and cost effective than earlier sequencing methods. NGS technologies tend to be fundamentally different, rely heavily on bioinformatics and all have benefits and drawbacks to their utilization (Pabinger et al., 2014). In 1990, the Human Genome Project launched. This project was focused on sequencing and gene…

We started off Wednesday, knowing we would be covering a topic that was completely new to pretty much everyone attending. We were covering transposable elements. These were first discovered by Barbara McClintock in corn kernels. She noticed that the corn kernels were either colored, or plain- but once in a while they were spotted. Most scientists at the time assumed that the chromosome for color had been repressed or had broken off. However, Dr. McClintock felt that if the chromosome had been…

of Hitler’s dream into a reality. Designer babies could be created by the manipulation of genes in an embryo. Scientists could edit genes that code for hair and eye color, height, intelligence, and genetic disorders, among other traits. These babies are often referred to in the media as GMO babies (Ko). The science behind designer babies is not advanced enough yet because DNA and genes are extremely complex. The Human Genome Project spent thirteen years and three billion dollars to sequence an…

In 1953, American biologist James Watson and English physicist Francis Crick discovered how genetic code was passed down through generations. They figured out that DNA worked like an instructional manual passing on genetic coding through the generations. It defines different characteristics such as height, eye color and even the diseases that each individual will likely develop. In 1990s, scientists began collaborating on the Human Genome project to identify how genetics played a role in the…

In order to accomplish the goal of genome synthesizing, the scientist needed to use certain equipment that would allow them to visualize and make data for the experiment. Previous work demonstrated that experimentation with a single codon was successful. Confirmation that the 57 codon versions of ads and tyrS were functional in vivo and that recoded and nsAA dependent and maintained fitness and provided extremely low escape rates as previously reported. Electroporation protocol…
