In the novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother Byron is so mean to people. Kenny treats people better than Byron does because Byron was beating up Larry Dunn, Kenny shares his lunch and his gloves with Rufus and Byron had his lips stuck to a mirror and Kenny was trying to help him but if it was Kenny said “If he was stuck Byron would have done some cruel stuff to him”. Kenny tricked his mom into getting him another pair of leather gloves so he and his friend Rufus could both have a full pair. He told his mom he lost his gloves so he got a new pair and when he got the gloves that was the last pair he was getting for the rest of the year so his mom tied the gloves to his jacket so that he would not lose them. That day Larry Dunn had stolen the gloves and painted them black so they did not look like Kenny’s. He told Byron and when Byron got them back he started beating up Larry just for the fun of it. He kept throwing Larry into the fence redundantly. Kenny had left the violence because he did not want to see how it would end. Kenny meets his friend Rufus on the bus they were not really friends at the time. They then were sitting next to each other at lunch and in class.
