Telephone Conversation by Wole Soyinka criticises the racial attitudes of his society to ironically highlight the unjust treatment of black people. The poem features a telephone conversation between an African traveller looking for accommodation and a white landlady, whom, upon hearing that the traveller is black, refuses to lodge him a room. Soyinka constructs three key concepts which include the supposed superiority of the white population, the ignorance of white people and the format of a real telephone conversation. Racial prejudice should not be present in any society, and Soyinka writes Telephone Conversation to criticise this issue. In Telephone Conversation, Soyinka investigates the hypothetical white superiority through the use of auditory imagery, tone and connotation of phrases, thus, highlighting the racial disparity in society. Through the imagery, the audience is invited to perceive the landlady as higher in the social hierarchy than the traveller. However, the grace is immediately juxtaposed by the tone of the landlady when she asks, “‘HOW DARK?’ … ARE YOU LIGHT / OR VERY DARK?’” “‘WHAT’S THAT?’ … ‘DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT IS.’” furthers this. The question is capitalised to show its significance in the poem. It reveals the harsh, untactful and impolite tone of the…

Nuggets. I didn’t grab one, or two, I grabbed about twenty, burning my hands in the process and shoved them into the hands of my boyfriend as I dove in for more. It was with this same class I inhaled about 13 nuggets with the vacuum power of Noo-Noo on speed. My friends were horrified, my hands were burnt but my stomach was full of sweet, sweet nuggets. You would think the tale would stop there, but the worst was yet to come. At about midnight every night a change comes over me, all maturity…

The Move Everyone loves Paris. I lived in Paris. I went to North Ridge Middle School with my best friends Ashley and Morgan. My mom told me we were moving . . . to Canada! I was shocked! Mom had gotten a promotion there. I didn’t want to move. Ashley and Morgan came over, and I told them the news. Morgan and Ashley hugged me. “We’ll miss you, Taylor!” they both said. “Dinner!” said Mom. We barely touched our dinners. “Why the long faces?” asked Mom. “I just told my friends about the move,” I…
