Being raised in a perfectionist’s home, my older siblings got straight As, and it was an expectation that I was prepared to achieve. Nothing lower was acceptable to either me or my parents. Anything lower than an A meant that I had made a mistake. It meant I had failed. That’s the way I felt about grades. Because of this, throughout all of high school, I was under tremendous pressure, especially during final tests and projects. Looking back on these experiences helped me to realize that I was worrying for the wrong reasons. Through all of high school, all I worried or cared about was my grades. I didn’t care about learning or the projects I was doing. All that mattered to me was that I got that A on my report card. I learned because it was required to learn to earn an A but not at all for the right reasons. Many students come to Brigham Young University, taught that it is a requirement to get straight As to be successful. They have been taught this since they were children and have come to believe it through past parents, teachers, and friends. Students should not be taught that they have to get straight As to be successful. This mindset of perfectionism is an unnecessary burden that weighs us down and will negatively affect one’s college experience of both learning and enjoying social life. Looking back, I now see that if I had learned for the right reasons, I would have gotten so much more out of my high school experience and would have been much more passionate…

When I was little, I wanted to be a chemist. I imagined myself in the lab coat and with goggles on, carefully pouring electric blue liquids and jade green foam back and forth into various containers, until something had exploded and I had discovered the best way to make flowers the size of people. As I grew up, I lost this fantasy, but I gained more knowledge on how I wanted to influence the world. Funnily enough, I discovered what I really wanted to do when I started working at Chick-fil-A…

NBA Playoff System Flawed The playoff system in which I believe is flawed is the National Basketball Association’s playoff structure. The NBA’s current playoff system is an elimination tournament between 16 of the NBA’s best teams that then lead to a final match to win the Larry O’Brien trophy. “The way these 16 teams qualify for the playoffs is by playing 82 regular season games between the end of October and Mid-April.”1 At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams in the Eastern and…

One Love gave the Misfits a scare through the duration of the first half of the Morale, Welfare & Recreation women’s soccer league game March 23 on the Multi-Purpose Field at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Although One Love had the opportunity to beat Misfits, they would lose 6-2. Most of the other MWR leagues have a few practices or none at all. However, the women’s soccer league has coaches that held tryouts, coordinated practices and have additional support from others willing to…

He descended to the earth in ten different forms (avatars) to preserve righteousness in the world. The Himalaya has done the same: Mountains reincarnate to preserve the planet's 'right environment' for life. This Vishnu-Himalaya parallelism has mythological beauty and richness. In Hindu mythology, Himavat is the personification of the Himalayan Mountains. He is the father of Ganga, a heavenly river that flew from the toe of Vishnu, but which was brought down to the earth to purify the ashes of…

have ever seen, Beartooth Mountain. The first time I see the mountain I am astounded anything could possibly be so immense. This is the moment I realize it is amazing that later today, I am going to be at the top. As I approach the mass of pine trees, I begin to smell the…

people I shared the chairlift with would tell me how lucky I was, but I would just smile politely and nod, unaware of my fortune. I had grown up in mountains and didn’t know anything different. Now that I have become so attached to my activities and lifestyle in Vail, I can’t imagine growing up anywhere else. The beautiful mountains that…
