    The Owens Valley Analysis

    • 2352 Words
    • 10 Pages

Introduction Postulated to be the result of either a long-runout landslide, or a structural pop-up, the Poverty Hills present a unique problem in the geologic community. Located on the western-most edge of the Basin and Range Province in eastern California (Fig.1), and within the Owens Valley basin, flanked by the Sierra Nevada and Inyo/White mountain ranges to the west and east, respectively. The hills are of particular interest as they represent an unusual combination of lithologies, structures, and a geomorphology that is inconsistent for the basin. Using geophysical methods, I hope to infer the source of this outcrop. A long-runout landslide, or a structural flower system is currently proposed to explain the Poverty Hills; previous gravity data indicates a consistent density matching the southern portion of the hills to that of the sediment-fill basin of the western Owens Valley, indicating a possible landslide model originating from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I propose an investigation into the origin of the Poverty Hills, located in eastern California, and within the Owens Valley horst and graben. Utilization of geophysical methods (gravity, and magnetic), along with classic geology techniques, and referencing any available geologic or geophysical data, I hope to provide evidence for either a landslide or possibly a pop-up model. I also hope to confirm the existence of a micro-horst and graben structure west of the Hills. This structure appears to be bounded by…
