The mountain displayed within the piece of art itself was named Lander’s Peak, after a US Army General named Frederick West Lander. Pompeii was an ancient Roman town situated near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy. Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum were destroyed in the Mt Vesuvius eruption that occurred just after lunch on the 24th August 79AD. Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano, located on the West coast of Italy, on the Gulf of Naples and is the only active land volcano in Europe.
