fathers love deeply. Commonly, a mother’s love is more visible; yet, fathers love their children unreservedly. In the event of serious mistakes and on those days when his children are at their worst, a Christian father is always there. There are three pictures painted in the Bible of fathers and if we can put them into one portrait, perhaps we can develop a deeper understanding and a greater appreciation for the kind of fathers children deserve. The first picture is the story of a father who left his son a rich heritage. Jonathan left his son a good name. (II Samuel 9) When Saul determined that he would kill David, Jonathan stood by him and helped him to escape the wrath of the king. Eventually Saul and his three sons were killed at Mount Gilboa and David became the king. He remembered Jonathan’s kindness and he said, “Is there not any left in the house of Saul, that I may show kindness to for Jonathan’s sake?” When David learned that Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, had survived the battle, he sent for him and said, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake, and will restore you all the land of Saul your father. And you shall eat bread at my table forever.” (II Samuel 9: 7) How wonderful it is, and how good it is for the children to inherit the good deeds of their father.
