mother, "when [she] was growing up, [she] primarily listened to alternative music from the 80’s. [Her] two favorite bands to listen to were “The Smiths” and “The Cure”. With this being said, the alternative music of the 80's, such as "The Smiths" and "The Cure", impacted my mother's life significantly and sparked the creative side of her personality. In turn, this creative incentive, which was influenced by the type of music she listened to, was the final factor in her becoming a hairdresser, rather than going to college. With such bands being such a large influence, one must wonder about their history and how they rose to become so influential. "The Smiths" were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band included singer Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. They "made their live debut late in 1982, and by the spring of 1983, the group had earned a small but loyal following in their hometown of Manchester and had begun to make inroads in London. "The Smiths'" rise to the upper reaches of the British charts was swift, and the passion of their fans, as well as the U.K. music press, indicated that the group had put an end to the synth-powered new wave that dominated Britain in the early '80s” (“The Smiths Biography”). "The Cure" was an English rock band formed in Crawley, West Sussex, in 1976, the lead singer primarily being Robert Smith. “The Cure" made its initial splash in the U.K. with the 1979 single “Killing an…

In our advanced age, we are constantly bombarded with music everywhere we go, whether it be during our shopping trips, on our bus rides, or even on our elevator ride to work. Many would agree that music is undeniably a big part of our lives; it has influenced society for decades. Others may give more acclaim to the artists behind the songs and not the…

worth? Rock legend Morrissey is no stranger to generating controversy and speaking his mind on hot-button social and political issues – but he may really have outdone himself this time. The former frontman of The Smiths just posted a self-published interview on his website in which he stated that London Mayor Sadiq Khan ‘can not talk properly,’ condemned halal meat and criticized its producers as ‘supporters of ISIS,’ blasted UK law as ‘pointless’ and also criticized Jewish Kosher practices,…

existence.” (Morrissey et al., 2005). Therefore, religion is a belief system concerning the purpose and creation of the universe and the force that governs it. There are three types of a religious worldview. The first type is a religious worldview “that holds beliefs in a divine power and/or powers beyond the human dimension.” (Morrissey et al., 2005). A few good examples of this type of this type of worldview is Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The second worldview is one that “maintains a…

Morrissey and Pease suggest that West Belfast was the setting of a number of crime-related issues, and the Royal Ulster Constabulary were not quick to solve them, as they were not particularly interested in the affairs of the Catholic community (Morrissey and Pearse,1982). As a result of this it was left to the community to deal with. On the one hand, IRA control over crime and violence could gain support from the community, as a means to an end, as such a high volume of crimes committed in a…

the new work to a postmodern aesthetic . This could be because it was created approximately a century later but more than likely, it is a transition of context, the original work was based on Van Gogh’s own room and the appropriated version is perhaps how Lichtenstein would illustrate his that room. The work could be seen as part parody and homage, parody in sense that Lichenstein replaced Gogh’s brush strokes with his own graphic aesthetic and saturated colours, yet homage in keeping the same…

“Nairobi.” In “Nairobi,” the author Joyce Carol Oates, tells the story of Oliver and Ginny who fake being a couple and go to dinner with some of Oliver’s friends. The theme of cheating in this story is illustrated by the way that almost all the characters are pretending to be something they are not. Ginny is being forced, to some extent, to dress up formally and pretend to be someone who she really is not. A similar theme is found in the song I Know It’s Over by The Smiths. This song was written…
