Located in northeast Oregon is the Wallowa Mountains, which contain a rich and understudied glacial history. In order to quantify the number of glaciation stages that have occurred in this locality I will examine twelve lateral moraines that border Wallowa Lake. This beautiful lake stretches 3 and a half miles north to south with a large, bordering moraine on each side and a terminal moraine at the north end. On the west side of the lake there are four moraines and on the east there are eight. As you move from the closest moraine to the farthest from the lake the respective ages of each moraine get older. There has been some age correlation between the west and some of the east moraines as illustrated in Crandell’s “Glaciation at Wallowa Lake,…

The Jacobsville Formation is the earliest formation of the Cambrian Period. Jacobsville Sandstone has a distinguishing characteristic about its deposition that sets it apart from the other formations in the Paleozoic Era. Jacobsville Sandstone is a stream and lake deposit unlike most of the other deposits which were marine sediment deposits. The sandstone is also uniquely red with light coloured marks throughout it which is caused by chemical leaching transversely throughout the bedding planes.…

Trimlines, which are rings of newly exposed rock, became noticeable around the inlet throughout the 2000s. Glaciers lift and carry sediments, rocks, and other fragments of the Earth’s surface and pile on the moraines. The moraine of the Columbia created an underwater ridge that prevented the sediments from moving past it. The moraine’s structure played an important role in the strength of the glacier before 1980. The glacier built its moraine over a period of time and the ice and rock acted like…

Glacial Lake London was reconstructed based on Dreimanis work, present-day topography, and lacustrine sediments found on top of the Arva Moraine bluffs in Medway Creek. For the first time, the lake is presented in its entirety at a variety of possible water levels. Catastrophic drainage was reconstructed based on breach dimensions, and geomorphic features found in the Komoka spillway area. Both of these approaches suggest that modern peak hydrology generated by snowmelt or rain-induced floods is…

base of El Capitan there is a moraine extending to the other side of the valley. While not clear whether it was the terminal moraine or a recessional moraine and that there could be one further west out of the mouth of the valley- there is a moraine nonetheless and that is yet another piece of evidence supporting the theory that there was a glacier in the valley at one point in time. While at the bases of Bridal Veil Falls on one …

The glacier can be identified from the key as the symbol of glacier ice. One of the main features is the lateral moraine. The lateral moraine is located around the outer edge of the glacier as well as south of the glacier, also positioned at the edge of Tasman Lake. Tasman Lake is a permanent lake as indicated by the key which runs from the terminal face of the glacier, southwards. At the south end of the lake lies an outwash plane, which also has a river running through which connects to the…

which further increases the sharpness. Hummucky moraine or disintegration moraines – are areas that unlike lateral or ribbed moraines do not have distinct direction or shape. They can be recognized by a variety of characteristics including poorly sorted clastic materials, depressions, and mounds or ridges of till. Glaciers left behind more than just the Great Lakes in the state of Michigan. The topography and landforms of Michigan were formed mostly from glacial activity. According to the MSU Department of Geography and L. M. Sommers, author of “Michigan: A Geography”, “Of all the glacial landforms, moraines best tell the tale of the retreat of the ice from the surface of Michigan. They mark the lines of halt and with their accompanying till plains, the lines of retreat. They reveal the halting retreats…
