was patriarchal. However, women of Cuba stepped up to play a powerful role that broke the pre-revolution gender roles when the rebellion and start of the Cuban Revolution came. Some women played the traditional role as wives and homemakers, whereas others played more central roles in the underground revolution. In order to do so, they represented imprisoned revolutionaries as lawyers, martyrs, interpreters, and leaders/managers of the M-26-7 Movement. Women thought they played such a huge role in the rebellion that one protested to Castro about letting them fight in the attack on the Moncada barracks. This would not have happened if they were not in the middle of a rebellion, as women would not have the audacity to speak up to a man so powerful. An essential thing women did while Castro was imprisoned for the attack on the Moncada barracks was smuggle out “Castro’s justification for the Moncada attack entitled ‘History Will Absolve Me’”. This speech was distributed throughout Cuba and had started the revolution while Castro was still imprisoned. Many Cubans found Castro’s speech to be motivational and influential, which caused them to want to fight against Batista’s dictatorship.
