“Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.” Written by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I agree with what Emerson has to say about being misunderstood, because nobody understood Edison and his theories he had, but look at him, he ended up creating the light bulb and allowing light during the night. I believe it is better to be misunderstood by people when you are brainstorming the next big thing, but sometimes it is hard, because nobody understands or gets what you are trying to do. “The stars awaken a certain reverence, because though always present, they are inaccessible; but all natural objects make a kindred impression, when the mind is open to their influence. Nature never wears a mean appearance.” Written by Ralph Waldo Emerson from Nature. I think this means that stars are apart of nature and it is something that you can not take from it such as you can from the ground. So every night when the stars come out it becomes beautiful to us all over again and we are stuck in a trance of awe. So I agree…

Some may not understand or agree with the statement “To be great is to be misunderstood,” from Emerson, but I believe that this aphorism is a perfect description of every great person who ever lived because every person worth knowing or learning about has been judged by others without deserving it. I have experienced this first hand within the past year of my life. While I know I’m not the greatest athlete in the world, I consider myself to be one of the top athletes in the school. When I…

    Being Misunderstood

    • 2 Pages

Most people don’t truly understand the misunderstood. Being misunderstood is hard because most people will “judge a book by its cover”. In other words, they really don’t know much about the person before they make a judgement on them. This is hard because everybody does it. Everybody is misunderstood in one way or another, but you may not know it. In life we will all experience this many times. Nobody can know every little thing about you. They will just observe something that is different and…

Those that are left out and are unrecognised are they misjudged or just misunderstood. Outsiders are not misjudged only misunderstood. People first start like everyone else then they are labeled, then become unsocial and are locked out from there on to adulthood. Many people are labeled at childhood as if they were an object. They get put into groups and many other things which exclude them from others. This forces them to only socialize with certain people later causing them to become…

lot of them are misunderstood by most of society and it is not till many years after their death that they achieve being understood by society. This happens when the artist has advanced ideas for his/her time or when there is a group of artists who oppose to those ideas. It is well known that time is divided into periods, and each one of them has its own artistic features. As a result of this, it could be said that an artist who belongs to a certain period has to follow some guidelines to…

Heroes are found in every corner of this universe. Most of time, while thinking of heroes, people think of superman or batman, but heroes don’t always have to be these characters who are “larger than life”. Heroes could be parents who are performing arduous tasks so their children can have a non-strenuous future. Karl Marlantes’ experience in Vietnam and the Odyssey manifest that heroes are people who do the right thing, while knowing that they might be misunderstood by society or might never…

Every great poem has an even greater meaning. “The Road Not Taken” is about a person who is deciding which way path to take. This poem is usually misunderstood because many people think that he is trying to decide which path is better, but actually he talks about how each of the paths are pretty much the same. “ Though as for that, the passing there / Had worn them really about the same” (Frost, 219-220). He is saying that both paths are pretty much equal and used just as frequent as the other.…

Is it actually a positive trait to be misunderstood? In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay, “Self-Reliance,” he urges intellectual and moral independence for everyone. Emerson claims that to be great is to be misunderstood. He implies that the general population usually does not understand or accept the greatness of a successful person. Refusing to conform with society is seen as a great aspect in the eyes of Emerson. Emerson’s claim is true because there are many people who are considered great today…

Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines recreation as “A means of refreshment or diversion”. It describes conservation as “official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management”. A true outdoorsman knows these words and their definitions by a commonly disregarded and misunderstood colloquialism “Pack it in, Pack it out”. Many people believe that this phrase translates into “If its mine, I pack it out”. What…

You tell the world who you are in a million different ways, some are subtle, some are not, but it doesn't seem to matter, this world has already got you pegged. Are outsiders those who are misjudged or misunderstood? The answer is no, because that's just not how it works. Whether or not you are an outsider isn’t subjective to other people’s feelings. It depends on your personality, who you truly are. No one else’s labels can make you an outsider. Outsiders are those who truly are what the…
