    City (Jewish Refugees)” painting by Minerva Teichert, and the painting “Lift Up Thine Eyes” by Norman Rockwell. Minerva Teichert’s painting was an oil on canvas, and was done in 1938. Norman Rockwell’s painting was an oil on board painting, done in 1957. Both of these paintings are from the BYU Museum of Art. These paintings are two different scenes of New York. Rockwell depicts New Yorker’s with hunched shoulders, low heads, and eyes cast down as they pass St. Thomas Church. A message is posted that reads “Lift up thine eyes”. Teichert portrays Jewish immigrants as they enter into New York Harbor. Unlike Rockwell’s painting, these immigrants have their heads up and are looking into the distance with hope in their eyes as they pass the Statue of Liberty. Rockwell has very distinct lines, and a lot of detail in his painting, where Teichert’s painting is kind of blurred, and not as detailed. As for color, Rockwell uses more neutral colors, where Teichert uses kind of muted neutral colors, and some primary colors as well. Rockwell’s painting also looks more 3-D, where Teichert’s painting looks a little more flat. In Rockwell’s painting you can look up the stairs, and into the building, and it doesn’t look as flat. Both paintings give kind of the illusion of having tight space. Rockwell overlaps the people to make the street look crowded, and Teichert overlaps the people on the boat to make it look like the boat is crowded with immigrants. Teichert also adds form into the…
