According to a research report conducted by the Ponemon Institute concluded that in 2016, 383 companies over 12 countries had their data breached with an average cost of 4 million dollars lost which becomes an average of 158 dollars per record. (2016 Cost of data breach study: Global analysis, 2016). In 2011 Steam, a gaming service owned by Valve had their database which held all 35 Million user’s personal data which included: encrypted credit card information, username, salted/hashed passwords and email/billing addresses hacked (Lee 2011). Throughout this essay, we will focus on the most common issues and challenges within database security. As the most used database servers are; MS SQL server and oracle, we will discuss the range of techniques to combat these security issues involving the database attacks. Methods of disclosing sensitive data will be discussed and the range solutions used by many IT security professionals to prevent these threats. Database security is a growing concern in any business which should not be ignored as the amount of database breaching incidents continues to grow at a dangerous rate each year costing businesses money and loss of trust from their clients. As more databases have the ability to be accessed over the internet and web-based application on devices, security threats will increase (Murray 2010).
