Dance is an art form consisting of individuals or groups moving in patterns, either practiced or impromptu, to the rhythm of music. Dance and music go hand in hand, allowing the music to set a tone for the dance, creating different styles of dance. Dance is likely to have begun as a ritual to appeal to a culture’s worshipped being or included in ones “rite of passage” (Histoy of Dance, n.d.). Evidence has been found in India showing the existence of dance in the form of paintings made in caves around nine-thousand years ago (Dance Facts, n.d.). Ancient Egyptians used dance to tell stories visually as part of their religion as well as a form of amusement (Dance Facts, n.d.). Dance was also used in the Greek culture in the “8th century BC” and the Hindu religious practices around the “1st century AD” (Histoy of Dance, n.d.). Greeks as well as Romans hosted commemorations to their gods that included dance among other things such as singing and the drinking of alcohol (Dance Facts, n.d.). Dance in Europe became more modernized with the coming of the Renaissance period, as previous practices of dance in Europe had been mostly for higher-class individuals (Dance Facts, n.d.). As this period was a time of revival, the invention of new forms of dance occurred (Dance Facts, n.d.). After the Renaissance, “periods of Baroque, post French Revolution, Elizabethan era, World War 1, Prohibition, Ragtime and pre-WW2 brought many new waves of dance styles” (Dance Facts, n.d.)
