minefield. Art and Literature created by veterans to reduce the effects of PTSD ultimately links, to multiple aspects of the book The Things They Carried. The mask created by a US Army Flight Medic relates to Norman Bowker from The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. The left half of the face covered with an American flag and in the eye a reflection of a formal military photograph. The right half of the mask is a skull with the sentence, “I have destroyed my life and myself, so that others may live” inscribed on the fractured jaw. This relates to Norman Bowker because on one side, he did his patriotic duty for his country. “Norman Bowker might then have listed the seven medals he did win: the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart” (135). This illustrates the picture of a good soldier who served his country valiantly, which is the Norman Bowker most people see. Underneath this heroic soldier, there is allot of hurt and guilt. During an intense mortar pounding, Norman Bowker let his friend Kiowa die “He released Kiowa’s boot and watched it slide away” (143). Kiowa was pulled down by the mud along with the person that Norman used to be. He was never his old self after this and it haunted him until “three years later hanged himself in the locker room of a YMCA” (149). After his deployment, Norman never adjusted back to normal life. The death in his past and…

Not all Medals are made of Metal An icy and bitter mist surrounded me. The sun had secreted behind piles of looming clouds, while droplets of water dispensed from the sky. The track bore a vast expanse of puddles, and runners plunged their way through them. I was sitting in the dewy grass underneath the canopy of our tent. Rain trickled down the stadium steps as I heard the booming announcer eagerly bellow, “Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the 2016 State Track and Field Meet.” My heart began to…

Anyway, I was fortunate enough to be chosen to lead the school in this. It was fantastic I got to stand up in front of my entire school and their parents and sing songs I absolutely and whole heartedly…
