Oshkosh becomes necessary to fully grasp the duplicity of his character. Born in 1795, Chief Oshkosh grew up in a tumultuous period in Menominee history. The Menominees had been entrenched in battles before with rival tribes such as the Winnebago and Chippewa, but American encroachment on land increased the frequency of these clashes. While the Menominee Nation remained officially neutral in the War of 1812, a 19-year-old Chief Oshkosh fought alongside other great Native American resistance fighters such as Tomah, White Elk, and Tecumseh against the United States. But Chief Oshkosh the Brave would soon transition from a warrior to a leader.…

Through the many statues commissioned by Col. John Hicks and the pamphlet that he directed and wrote (published posthumously), civilians glean a better understanding of the city’s purpose in erecting a Chief Oshkosh monument. Rather than working with Menominee tribal leaders to determine the best public monument to honor Chief Oshkosh’s life and Menominee history, Chief Oshkosh’s story becomes a conduit for a movement that prioritizes beautifying public spaces rather than educating the public.…

Both Gaia theory and Indigenous cosmologies are synthesized on the idea of perceiving the Earth as a living organism, and treating it as one. Menominee Natives believe that nature has its own voice, natural gestures and sounds such as the wind blowing through the trees, a crow cawing, and the pounding of the ocean are often perceived as forms of planetary communication. They also believe their own vocalization as part of nature’s expressiveness, and so they practice with chants and ceremonies…

The trial of Chief Oshkosh for the murder of Pawnee tribe member Okeguay due to a Menominee tradition of retaliation executions served less as an execution of justice and more as a drawn-out legal proceeding with no direct consequences and massive legal ramifications. Baird records that upon his motion for final judgment in light of the conviction, “the Judge gave, at length, an…
