    Mascara is a cosmetic product that is used to darken, thicken, and lengthen eyelashes to enhance one's natural beauty. This product is used worldwide and is apart of many girls everyday lives. It originated thousands of years ago, and can even be traced back to 3400 - 30 BC, (CurioCity, 2007) but wasn't sold universally until 1913 when T.L. Williams created a type of mascara that consisted of vaseline and coal dust that was originally for his sister Mabel. In 1915 he named his first cosmetic company Maybelline by combining his sister’s name, Mabel and the word vaseline (Toedt, 2005). Mascara consists of mostly soap, waxes, oils, and pigments (Moore, 2003). It’s two main ingredients include carbon black, and beeswax. Carbon black’s formula name is CH4. It is produced from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. Beeswax, made of fatty materials, is a natural products that bees produce. Its formula name is C15H31CO2C30H61 (The Chemistry of Cosmetics, 2009). Some mascaras are soluble in water and have weak hydrogen bonds meaning they're not waterproof. Waterproof mascara has stronger hydrogen bonds and heavier bases to keep the pigments attached to the eyelashes through water and or tears (CurioCity, 2007).…
