While attending George Washington High School in San Francisco he came face to face with a Rembrandt Portrait at the Palace of the Legion of Honor that had "a sense of aliveness about it"; it inspired him to become a portrait painter. Then, he had decided against applying to the California School of Fine Arts, where Abstract Expressionism was in vogue and enrolled at the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) in Oakland. While at CCAC four major exhibitions held at San Fr ancisco's M. H. de Young Museum made memorable impressions on him: the retrospectives of Oskar Kokoschka, Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann, and Hyman Bloom. "They were a profound influence on me to maintain my position as a young figurative artist," the artist later recalled. IN the summer of 1950 Oliveira had the chance to study with Beckmann, who was teaching in a summer program at Mills college for eight weeks. Although Beckman spoke limited English, Oliveira observed him carefully and decided that he "really was everything that the artist should be." After earning his BA in 1951 and completing his MFA in 1952, he served as an Army mapmaker at the Presidio in San Francisco between 1953 and 1955. Upon discharge, he set up a studio in his East Bay garage and dedicated himself to making art.
