Today, February 7, 2017, I was able to participate in another fairly typical day with Missy on the medical/surgical unit. In addition, I had my weekly meeting with Missy, where we followed up on my goals and I received great feedback regarding my weekly goals. I had two main patient interactions today and various check-ins. The first patient interaction I participated in today was with one of our unit’s long-term patient, a 7-year-old female. Prior to bringing the patient to the playroom, I planned and set up the activities. I planned two art activities and decided that I would let the patient decide what we would do if we had leftover time in our hour long session. We had previously made glitter calm down bottles, but this patient had mentioned wanting a glitter wand like the one on my badge holder/key chain. Therefore we made glitter wands, and these were much more successful than the original calm down bottles we created. The next activity was called “syringe love bugs,” that I found in an activity book to desensitize patients to syringes. This medical art activity matched perfectly with the time of year (Valentine’s Day is approached) and involved colored sand, a funnel, a hot glue gun, pipe cleaners, foam eyes, and markers. This activity was less structured and allowed the patient to express herself through her artwork. She engaged Missy and I and invited us into her artwork/play.
