Stay Down. That is the advice author and teacher Mitchell Jackson has for college students. Stay down because “you never know where you’re going to end up.” To stay down means to keep open to the possibilities. Jackson’s life is an example of someone who has seen the possibilities and chosen to stay open to them. Jackson grew up in Portland as the oldest child of a drug addicted mother. In 1997 Jackson was arrested on drug charges and spent more than a year in prison. After his release, Jackson went on to earn an MA in writing and an MFA in creative writing. In addition to being an award-winning author he is on the faculty of New York University and Columbia University. When reflecting on his journey from drug dealer to teacher and author much of it revolves around a basketball court. In the parks of Portland, he learned conflict resolution while here at Clark College he learned to take responsibility for his actions from coach David Waldow. When asked about other life lessons that came from his time on the court Jackson answered “I learned that you have to put in the work. I would be in Irving Park on days like this (pointing out to the snow-covered campus) because they had a covered hoop. I would go at like 9 o’clock … and I would just shoot and dribble and shoot and dribble and I would go home and get on my steps and do like a hundred toe raises and no one was telling me to do this.
