Accents of the group ABBA are seen throughout Mama Mia. The songs which exhibit pop rock, glam rock and Euro pop disco texture are mainly derived from the groups previous albums. The use of both prose and poetry were used in Mamma Mia. Chiquitita is one of the songs that is almost entirely poetry. Tanya and Rosie are consoling Donna while singing to her and trying to get her to buck up. There was spoken dialogue throughout the show. The text during the show was understandable for the most part and the actors did a nice job of conveying the emotions. Most of the dialogue and voices were upbeat and popish in theme. Though the use of spoken dialogue was used and helped move the story forward, the music was an integral part of conveying the…

On October 4, 2016, I went and saw Mamma Mia at 8:00pm at the Lutcher Theatre. This show was performed by Work Light Productions. Mamma Mia is a musical about a girl who is about to get married, Sophie, and wants to know who her father is so he can walk her down the aisle. The only problem is that her mom hasn’t told her much about her father so she doesn’t even know a possible name until she finds one of her mom’s old journals. She finds three possible father’s and invites them all. Her…

Mamma Mia! is often judged as a Greek tragedy full of drama, heartbreak and simplicity. This misconception could not be more wrong. It is, in fact, a fiendishly difficult musical. Quite a few people still make this assumption, and of those people, almost all come out in the end exuberant and enthralled in the disco era vibes. Mamma Mia is first and foremost a Greek comedy about a silly messed up wedding. Despite being a comedy, it is difficult to find much to laugh at in this production. This…

According to Allen Barra, “There is no disputing that Title IX has been a boon for America’s young women, who are now displaying their athletic talents on fields and on courts that were long the bastion of men” (21). Barra’s statement could be taken in a literal or a figurative sense. Women are literally demonstrating their talents in sports where men were once the only stars; however, women are figuratively demonstrating their talents off the field also. Not only can women play sports and be…

The Godfather? When you hear Roman Polanski’s name, what do you think of? Rosemary’s Baby? The Pianist? What about Woody Allen? Do you think about Annie Hall, or maybe Hannah and Her Sisters? based off the same book both are remotely the same there some major differences though. The actors are different so therefore they each played the part differently. I think that Leonardo played a better Gatsby his presentation of him was far better than Redford’s. He became the part, to me Redford had no emotion whatsoever. I think the love was better shown in the 2013 version rather than the 1974 version. In the older movie the love that was supposed to come off as forbidden came off as…

I have chosen “Mamma Mia”, a fictional story inspired by the music of the Swedish pop group, ABBA. The title of the musical is one of the group’s songs, and it sung throughout the show. I chose it because I saw it pretty recently with one of my closest friends, and it opened up a world of new love and appreciation for Broadway and Musical Theatre to me, even though I loved it already. It’s hard to talk about the musical without mentioning the history of the hugely successful group, ABBA.…
