This was an obstacle presented to the reader and engages me to see how she will overcome it. When initially reading the short story I was immediately drawn in because I much the same way as Corliss. The fact that she wasn’t complacent and chose not to accept her predicament I admired. This yearn to find acceptance caused her to go on a journey in attempts of connecting with someone similar to her. Much like Corliss I had to face escaping stereotypes placed on me by society pertaining to education. Demographically where I'm from in south Mississippi the Whites should be ahead in the education world. When someone like me tried to be ahead that’s when bullying took place. Initially, I had let the bullying affect me and I began to withdraw myself from my education and turned to bad behavior. After I realized that I was only feeding to the negativity my life took a turn for the better, and in doing so I made it my way of life to do something new. I now try to separate myself from negative stereotypes. Through self soul identity searching I learned that just being myself is what makes me happy. I am no longer trying to find myself in the approval of others, and in doing so I have found that people can connect with me on a broader scale.
