In this essay, i will be focusing on the middle section of Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run (Lola Rennt, 1998) starting at the bank where Lola takes her father hostage, demanding 100,000 Marks from the cashier, to the post death scene of Manni (45 minutes to 53 minutes). I am going to be focusing on mise-en-scene how colour is used to portray different meanings in this segment of the film, and how it impacts the narrative, and the meaning behind this. “Lola rennt engages twenty first century audiences through a plethora of post-modern themes such as chance, circumstance and time.” (McAllister, G, 2007) Twkyer uses these aspects in the mise-en-scene as symbolism that I will explore in this essay. Firstly, I will talk about the significance of colours in this film as a whole, then go into detail about what these colours mean specifically later in this essay. “The iconography and motifs in a film are used to communicate information to the audience about characters and emotion without having to use dialogue” (Film Education, 2010) From this, you see that colours, in this film, are used for meaning without having to explain why, which ties in with the 20 minutes this film is set in. From what i have gathered by analysing this film, is that the colour red symbolises power, aggression and progression within the narrative, this is what we (the audience) want to happen, the props and people who help and progress the story. A few examples of this in this segment are: Lola’s hair, the swat…

audience interaction because of the prop bags (that was a great way to help the audience be involved), and with the whole play starting with Magenta in the audience and ending with the dancers doing the Time Warp in the aisles. Red, blue, and green each have a complementary color which allows them to make white when they are mixed. Yellow is a complementary color of blue, magenta and green are complementary colors, and red and cyan are complementary colors. This is similar to the cone cells because the cone cells are sensitive to red, green, or blue light. And the lights of different wavelengths simulate a combination of…
