    The main battle tank for the US was the M4 Sherman. The M4 Sherman was superior to many of the German tanks at the time with the exception of the Tiger IV. However the gasoline powered engine and lighter armor gave them a weakness as they would easily catch fire when hit by the heavier guns of the German Tiger IV and superior anti-tank weapons. The main gun on the M4 Sherman was a 75mm gun that was equivalent to superior than the guns used by other German tanks, however it was unable to penetrate the heavy armor of the Tiger IV (Vincent M. Carr). While the German Panzer Tiger IV Heavy Battle Tank was vastly superior to the medium tanks of the US forces, the majority of the tanks in use by the 2 German Divisions were of older Panzer III and IV designs that utilized 50mm and 75mm guns. Only the Tiger VI’s 88mm gun had clear advantage over the M4’s armor (Vincent M. Carr). Even though the Germans had an advantage in the Tiger IV and 88mm anti-tank guns, technology alone wasn’t a deciding factor because the majority of the German tanks in use were inferior to the M4 Sherman and not adequately armored against the 75mm gun on the M3 Stuart self-propelled tank destroyer.
