The Problems of Pennies MaKenzi Bowden Snow College English 2010 October 27, 2016 The Problem of Pennies The writers grandparents know that a penny is worth more than one cent even though it only costs one cent. They always pick up pennies whenever they see them and never leave them on the ground. Benjamin Franklin once said, “A penny saved is a penny earned” (BrainyQuote 2016). If you pick up every penny that you find, they eventually will add up sooner or later. Nowadays, there is nothing that actually costs a penny. People look down at the ground, see a penny and leave it there. For years and years, people have been wanting to do something about pennies. Pennies have become a problem here in the United States and also around the world. Therefore, pennies need to be taken care of. The history of the penny began in 1787 when it was the first coin minted in Massachusetts (Snodgrass 2016). An inventor in 1787, invented a device to mill blanks and stamp the edges of the coin so it could not be counterfeited (Snodgrass 2016). When the penny was first minted, it was five times heavier and 50% larger and it was made out of 100% copper (A Brief History of the U.S. Cent 2016). Abraham Lincoln has been on the penny since 1909 on the anniversary of his 100th birthday. Also in 1909, the phrase “In God We Trust” was added to the penny. For the anniversary of Lincoln’s 200th birthday in 2009, there were four different designs that show some aspects of his life (A Brief History of the…

The Book of Yaak by Rick Bass I hate “The Book of Yaak”. This book should not have been written. The fault, however, does not lie with author Rick Bass. Bass’ style is clear and poetic, intermingling of his not-quite-stream-of-consciousness prose seamlessly with the scientific data and information that illustrates the dire situation for his place, the Yaak Valley of Northern Montana, and all of his fellow citizens, lynx, deer, wolves, wood thrush, owls, and grizzlies. “The Book of Yaak” is Rick…

Dragonetti spent much of his life experimenting on the bass, working to perfect its capabilities. In his younger days he had sampled both the four string and the three string basses but preferred the three string which he would tune in various ways. He was one of the first to drop the tuning from A- D- G to G- D- G, giving him access to lower pitches. When he played Der Freischütz he would lower the A string down to F# for the first two movements. His hard work and experimentations with the bass…

First, the harmony consists of a repeated eleven chord group, which is played through most of the song. This repetition is called an ostinato. Throughout a majority of the song, the rhythm is comprised of a bass drum beat with extravagant riffs included between the lines. Next, the melody is a combination of singing and shouting. Commonly, there are numerous repeated notes at the start of the line with a downward formula at the end of the line when the words are sung. The timbre is prominent in…

instrument in countless genres of music (Fidyk). In the late 1800’s, the most popular bands in the United States were American brass bands. During the Civil War every military unit had its own band and after the war the bands stayed together and continued to play together. The traditional parade style they played before was moved inside. to the dream like tone. A piano and bass guitar beginning to play marks the transition from the introduction to the ballad. fill the space and do there given job very well, for example the tambourine and the wood Guiro come into the mix to help fill the space during the main body of the piece, but they are not so overpowering that they become the main focal point, they play there point and then fall out with the majority of the other instruments at the tempo change. The bongo drums, synth strings, and ambient vocals help fill up the mix in the same way. And the lead instrument, I am sure is some kind of lute or…
