    lived. Mary Anning was born on the 21 May, 1799 in the small coastal town of Lyme Regis, Dorset, England . She was only one of two children to survive infancy, along with her brother Joseph . Mary was named initially named after her elder sister Mary, who perished in a house fire at the age of four . At the age of 14 months, Mary had already achieved local infamy by surviving death. After a torrential downpour started on 19 August 1800 during a horse-riding demonstration, a group of four including Mary found shelter under a nearby tree . The tree was struck with lightning and despite all odds, Mary was the lone survivor, after being brought back to life with warm water 6. Anning grew up in a seaside home with: mother, Mary Moore, father, Richard Anning, and brother where she lived her entire life. Richard, was a trades carpenter and cabinet maker, but had a curiosity for collecting fossils . During Anning’s childhood it was Richard who took Mary (and Joseph) on “fossil hunting expeditions” teaching them techniques on finding fossils 7. Richard soon realized his collecting could become lucrative, thanks to the international rise in fossils findings and the growing curiosity over their existence . At the time of Anning’s childhood much of England was struggling with poverty, recovering from the Napoleonic and civil wars as well as religious conflict, taking greater impact on isolate small towns such as Lyme 8.
