The industry started when Frederick Weyerhaeuser invested in the lumber industry. He expanded his business in Minnesota to sawmills and small railroad lines. In 1890, he bought more than 200,000 acres of timberland in central Minnesota. Weyerhaeuser and his partners cut down acres of white pine.
