Several years ago the Foundation provided support to Oberlin College to launch a planning effort for the Oberlin Project, an ambitious effort to make the City of Oberlin and all of its institutions carbon neutral. The effort is now well on its way and showing impressive results. Oberlin’s energy supply is now 97% renewable, Oberlin College has committed to only building new buildings that achieve the highest level of green building standards and the Oberlin Project is working with farmers and land holders across Lorain County to protect thousands of acres of farmland and greenspace. As part of this program, the Oberlin Project has a goal of sourcing 70% of the community’s food from local farmers. To achieve its local food goals, the Oberlin Project is launching a food aggregation hub (the hub) and an incubator kitchen. The kitchen will serve as both an incubator for local food businesses selling value added products like salsa, and as a co-packing facility for institutional buyers.
