Longitude by Dava Sobel is a book about how the first accurate clock for determining longitude was made. The book starts off by describing the longitude problem which is about how difficult it is to determine longitude at sea. In order to determine longitude, two clocks are needed, one from the home port and one based upon the local time of the ship. The difference in times allows for the longitude of the ship to be determined. However, it is very hard to make accurate clocks at sea due to the swinging motion of ships making pendulums invalid. This was such a problem that multiple governments offered prizes to solve this longitude problem with the British prize being offered by a Board of Longitude when the Board has determined that the problem…
2017 Longitude: A Tale Of History and Navigation Longitude, by Dava Sobel, is a work of historical nonfiction that tells the tale of John Harrison who, through hard work and determination, helped solve the centuries old issue of determining longitude while at sea. Sobel uses interviews with historians, as well as her own personal reading and studies to piece together the most accurate account of the events and individuals surrounding Harrison’s invention of the marine chronometer. The story is…
The graph above compares the optimal depth for latitudes 21.4S 32.4E, 21.4S 55.3E, and 21.4S 65.3E on the given dates. Latitude 21.4S 32.4E is located in Africa between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, Latitude 21.4S 55.3E is located on Reunion island, and Latitude 21.4S 65.3E is located in the Indian Ocean. Biomass burnings alter the optical depth in Africa, whereas volcanic activity is responsible for the variations in optical depth on Reunion Island. According to the graph, biomass burnings create a…
Criminologists employ cross-sectional and longitude studies as observational studies during research. The two studies help criminology research to establish a comprehensive research methodology for comparisons of variables. Additionally, they create a coherent epistemology for deducing cause and effects. Mark Stafford observes that most criminology theories and research are causal. They attempt to establish the correlation between cause and effect. The criminology research is therefore designed…
To see the similarities and differences between wind patterns in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres alongside with explaining the major wind belts. Material: • Map of North America with longitude and latitude • Drawing compass Procedure: 1. View the map from the lab given. The map represents the barometric pressures at 5000 feet in North America on a precise day in February. 2. Use the Web to get another map of North America that covers the same approximate area shown in the map given in the…
moved across the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea during June 1957. The system began deepening over the Gulf of Mexico during on June 24, 1957. On June 25 at 06 GMT, the tropical storm was located at 21.6 Latitude, 93.3 longitude with wind speeds up to 70 mph. On June 25, the storm stopped over the southwestern Gulf and it quickly became a hurricane. The storm was located at 23.9 latitude, 93.7 longitude with wind speeds up to 90 mph. The storm moved northward at 5mph, and it…
world had some method of time recognition and a local prime meridian, which was in operation. Most people calculated time based upon the sun. Some communities used instruments to observe the suns zenith at noon. And with the development of the pendulum clock, in the 17th century, the observance of time was sufficiently accurate and was used at sea to determine longitudes in the 18th century. As travel improved, and forms of transportation, modernized in the 1850s and 1860s, in America, and,…
Emily Waldo Bezy Geo. Honors 15 August 2017 “Geography & It’s 5 Themes” Geography is the study of the Earth, specifically the land and its features. The subject can be divided into two categories: Physical Geography and Cartography. Physical Geography entails actual points that can be located using latitude and longitude as well as landforms, such as mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, plateaus, etc. Cartography is the study and / or practice of drawing maps. In Cartography; one must…
How does Physical Geography affect us? Geography has affected us humans overtime in multiple ways. You might be thinking how? Well, physical appearance is one because of the lines of longitude and latitude. That I will then later on, go into detail about how our appearance is affected by the lines of longitude and latitude. Physical geography is what creates us modern humans today and how we live and how we contribute to society. In this essay I will cover up the ways how physical geography has…
geographically, there became a need for a portable mechanical clock that could be used to find longitude in an effort to safely navigate the seas. Early mariners did not sail out of sight of land in order to keep from getting lost. By using the Sun and stars, sailors in the Northern Hemisphere were able estimate time in order to locate their position on the open ocean. Navigators, using Celestial navigation, were able to calculate latitude, using a quadrant, by measuring the angle of between the…
