In 1776, he became an aide-de-camp, a personal assistant, to General Putnam. Burr later gained the title of Lieutenant Colonel of Malcom’s Regiment on January 4, 1777. Soon after, at the age of 21, Burr was the Commander of the Regiment at Orange County, New York. In June 1778, Burr led his regiment into the Battle of Monmouth.
