Even while there were only small pockets of individuals subverting these values of family in the 1950’s, this minority was still present in literature. This shows that literature as a whole does the display the cultural norms of any given decade it was published. However, literature also can also directly affect society. In Lionel Trilling 's Collection of essays “The Liberal Imagination,” he jump-started the notion of liberalism “... as a culture rather than an ideology or a political movement. ” (Bender, 327) His claim that conservative ideals were no longer being perpetuated in culture, even while this was blatantly untrue with him even citing conservative writer William Faulkner in the essays.(Trilling, 213) But, this did not stop the general public and politicians from believing this notion of unchecked liberalism using it as groundwork to start ‘The Conservative Intellectual Movement’( Nash, 86-87). Trilling is a powerful example of how literature can ignite movements. Therefore as literature can create and demonstrate what is the cultural normative, it is natural to see how literature can further perpetuate the belittlement of the disabled community.
