Four years of it has made my nose go numb to the smell. The bus pulls into the parking lot, and we begin to load up our bags. None of us are happy about how early it is, but many are too hyped up to go back to sleep on the bus. We pile in, and wait. The injured get on last. There’s Ben, our senior starting tight end. Tall as a skyscraper, slow as anyone I’ve ever seen. But he had great hands. Tore his ACL first game of the season. Then there was Noah, who was supposed to be our starting quarterback. Smart kid on the field. Knew how to get out of trouble when under pressure. Broke his collar bone in the second game as well. Made a full recovery after 7 weeks, just to re-break it at practice. And finally, there was Eli. Our junior middle linebacker. Kid had a heart of gold, hit like a brick wall, and was probably the most liked kid on the team. Also tore his ACL on the first kickoff of the second game. We were down three starters. We had a sophomore tight end who was our only option, we were on our 3rd quarterback, and half the team had something fractured or busted or torn or broken. But we could all still play, so we did. And here we were, on our way to a state playoff game. We started the season 1-3. And then went on streak. We hadn’t lost a game since the fourth week. We all had big dreams of getting state rings, getting to have a “Lambkin Party” in the locker room at Mile High. And we were about to find out just how far those dreams would go. The whole game was a battle.…

According to Joe Daniel football, “A defense tackles in a 4-3 defense will need to be very strong and big, capable of winning one-on-one matchups against an offensive guard. “ They must be able to defeat double teams without giving so much ground, either by strength or proper technique.” “It is important that these players have proper body position to…

The exhilaration of hitting people that came with playing linebacker made me think of myself…

whole season only one team went undefeated, the Colts. I played on the colts with a lot of my friends. My coach told us that the practice will be harder than games, and they were by a lot. We had to run up steep hills, run around a hockey rink twice, then run ladders the size of a football field, then last of all, we had to run full length football fields down and back five times with full pads and helmets on. (It got really hot and sweaty fast and I had a visor on so that fogged up fast.)…
