    In 1987 sudan had terrible living conditions such as warfare limiting their supplies. The people of south sudan had to have confidence, persistence and hope. The book Long Walk to Water written by Linda Sue Park has two main characters, Salva and Nya. The book follows their story through different time periods in Southern Sudan. Salvas life is affected in 1987 by warfare. Nyas life is affected by the lack of water and food and having to journey every day on foot to get unsanitary water. Salva and Nya persist through life threatening events and are able to survive. One survival factor for Salva is persistence. One example of this is “The soldiers were forcing them into the water.” (72) This shows that Salva will have to swim through crocodile infested waters and persist. A second example of this is “..as they trudged through the heat.” (73) This shows Salva will need to keep going even in the burning heat. “Salva saw the telltale flick of a crocodile's tail flop down near a man's hand…”(77) Salva will need to persist through the fear of being killed.
