    The Ladies Choice When verbalized by a man, the words “will you marry me?” signals a tradition that is accepted by all and ages old. Having this same saying spoken by a women however, is still exceptionally rare. Women should take charge of their decisions and ask first rather than the man. It is good to break tradition and be different. Who knows, maybe the marriage will be better in the long run. As stated by the New York Times, women are only allowed to pop the question once every four years according to an old Irish tradition. “The Ladies Privilege,” as it was known back then was first thought of in the fifteenth century by an Irish nun named St. Brigid. By her actions she decided that on February twenty-ninth a women should be able to ask the man to marry her instead of the other way around. She did this to balance traditional gender roles like how leap year balances the calendar. In reality having a women propose to her lover would be a great and empowering thing to do, but not everyone sees it that way. All though it may seem the leap year tradition was giving women opportunities it was actually keeping them in their place. Katherine Parkin an associate professor at the University Monmouth who was interviewed by BBC News says, “Back then women who asked men to marry were portrayed as ugly, mannish, crass or desperate.” Years later, women still see this holiday as an opportunity to get down on one knee and ask for their partners hand in marriage- on February…
