More people started liking the tunes they produced, and they got a deal with Columbia Records to release their first album. The Beastie Boys named their first album prior to its release, but it was changed to “Licensed to Ill” because Columbia Records refused to have it released with a gay slur in the title. “Licensed to Ill” was released in 1986 as their first number one hit album. It was the first rap album to reach number one on the United States pop chart. The Beastie Boys released three more albums that reached number one on the Top 100 chart.
