    Trebuchet Research Paper

first war machine to use gravitational and leverage principles to launch a projectile. A catapult uses the elasticity of different materials to provide the launching force, like a bow or slingshot, which is necessarily limited by the material used—a tree can only be bent so far before it breaks. The trebuchet uses simple levers and angular momentum. Trebuchets are often more effective than catapults because they can launch a projectile of greater weight and all recoil is absorbed by the structure itself. Due to this absorption, a trebuchet can be mounted on a wheeled structure more easily, as it does not need a massive base or greatly extended forward part to keep it from flipping itself over after every launch. Trebuchets are also capable of launching projectiles further than a catapult of similar size due to the physics principles involved and were often favorable in attacks against castles and other fortifications due to their effective range as compared to battering rams and catapults. The trebuchet launches an object as a projectile through the use of a simple, yet oddly complex, lever arm and a counter-weight system with a sling on the end of the lever arm. In any successful trebuchet design, the counterweight must be heavier than the combined weight of the projectile and the beam. In most designs, the beam is hinged closer to the counterweight than the projectile, which generates a mechanical advantage, as long as the counterweight is sufficient, and results in a…

Patiently, I waited for the rich machine to recognise the last remnants of my savings, I looked around and saw men and women laughing, drinking and winning, their smiles never leaving their face. Then I saw myself in the reflection of the screen; sweating, panting and desperate as a dog begging for food. A few moments later, the computer screen displayed in bold bright colours “Pull the lever, and test your luck”. I looked towards the black lever anxiously, again for the sixth time of the day…

I was awake and exited the room, giving me one last look of clemency. The guard came over to me, smiling, and began to speak in a sarcastic lilt. “Guess what, sweetheart? Your expiration date got moved up, and magically that happens to be today! That’s what happens to people who try to outsmart the system! Any last words?” I declared my final statement: “It wasn’t me.” He shrugged and walked over to a lever on the side of the wall. I took a final look at the people in the spectating room. Why…

Hey Riley, I really enjoyed reading your post this week! Continuing your idea that the criminal justice system is too lax, and this has had a detrimental impact on offenders in Canada. Davies (2008) discussed the idea of Project Ceasefire which was presented by Boston officials to help reduce youth gangs and crime rates. The project is what they call a lever-pulling strategy which aims to prevent violent crime by being incredibly tough on crime. The name lever-pulling strategy comes from the…

In Michael Pringle’s essay, “The Scarlet Lever: Hester’s Civil Disobedience”, Pringle argues that in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Hester uses the scarlet “A” to empower her individual self against the Puritan magistrates. Using Henry David Thoreau’s “Resistance to Civil Government”, Pringle elaborates on the significance of the scarlet letter, and prove it to be a symbol of Hester’s defiance within her community. After reading the article, it is confirmed that Hester’s embroidered “A” allows…

Levers are needed within the body so that any small forces can be used to help the bigger forces which are needed. The muscle and bones come together to make a lever, this helps to turn a pivot joint also known as mechanic advantage. There are 4 areas of a lever such as the bone on our bones turn to lever arms, the joints turn to pivots, the muscles stimulate effort to move the force or load and the body parts give muscles strength to move what needs lifted. 1st class levers are very uncommon…
