In the story, “Good Country People,” there are many themes; however, the main theme is identity. Throughout the story, many identities are shown but by the end of the story the real identities of the characters are revealed. O’Connor enlightens the reader they may often be fooled directly by an individual who is pursuing a separate identity. For example, during the story, the Bible Salesman fools the community by betraying their trust in him, Mrs. Hopewell rudely misjudges others, and Joy characterizes herself poorly. After denying him, Manley seeks to render her guilt with his choice of words. Mrs. Hopewell kindly apologizes for being hostile and invites him inside to enjoy dinner with her. She then makes the statement that Manley is welcome back anytime. It is dark. It always is. My mind, like the hell-lit cave, is ignorant to life outside of darkness. I see mere shapes and speak but madness; the language I had once known as meaningless as a singular grain of sand on a sprawling shore. Life is but a farce, a fable constructed by the imagination of others. I glance around my woozy surroundings, as real as a figment, as constant and concrete as a collection of dust. The fire burns brighter than the hell from which I was spawned, flickering and…

I also found “Lawrence’s big break came when she was discovered at 14 while on spring break in New York with her family. A stranger asked to take her picture and took her mother’s phone number, then called the next day to ask her to do a screen test. Things happened quickly after that: Lawrence stayed in New York City for the summer, acting in commercials for MTV and filming the 2007 thriller Devil You Know with Lena Olin. (The film was shelved due to lack of distribution and was eventually…
