Westerns: The Final Chapter During my research, I came to the conclusion that I really didn’t enjoy westerns very much. In order to understand why I don’t enjoy westerns much, we must first get a basic idea of what a western is. Westerns are more of an older genre as they are not made much in the modern day and age. To understand westerns, knowing the basic themes and elements would be most helpful. The four main themes of a western include: Man vs. Nature, Good vs. Evil, East meets West and Isolation. These themes will give you an indication as to what your plot might be about and are the basic guideline the movie will follow. Other things that might indicate a western film are known as elements. These usually include Indians, cowboy hats, horse’s guns, and most importantly landscape. Indians are both an element and a theme, they fell into the theme of Good vs. Evil or East meets West. Indians were extremely important as this is what a lot of early westerns were based off of. “The conflict between white pioneers and Indians forms one of the basic themes of the western” (Editors of Encyclopedia 2). Landscape is a very important one because it represents freedom and isolation, it shows the setting of the movie but it also does so much more than that.
