tracked the amount of loads of laundry my family did as well as refrigeration use. As previously stated, being conscious of your actions is half of the battle. To begin, I first kept a log of how long the lights in bedroom are on. This averaged about 5.75 hours a day. I then replaced the standard incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs. More than “one-fifth of US electricity is used to power artificial lighting. Light-emitting diodes based on group III/nitride semiconductors are bringing about a revolution in energy efficient lighting” (Pimputkar, DenBaars, & Nakamura, 2015, pp.180). LED lights not only require less electricity to produce the same wattage of an incandescent light bulbs, but also features a longer life span. Based on my calculations, it costs $0.038 to run one standard incandescent light bulb. If you multiply that by the six light bulbs in the bedroom, it costs $0.22 a day. The cost of to light LED light bulb is $0.009 a day. If multiply that by the six lights in the bedroom is $0.05 a day. This is a savings of $0.04 per day. Figure 1. Shows the calculations for each type of bulb. The comparison shows that LED light bulbs are cheaper to light. The next aspect is temperature setting. As temperatures rise, the more work the air conditioner was used. The baseline data the temperature setting on the thermostat was set sixty-eight degrees. I have realized at the end of this project, this was not a energy conscious decision. Not only did I…

study done by OSRAM Opto “Worldwide, lighting accounts for approximately 19% of electricity consumption, corresponding to 2.4% of energy consumption. Replacing incandescents with LEDs would theoretically reduce global electricity consumption for lighting by 50%” this reduction of energy cost means that mankind could still keep using energy without being any where near as harmful to the earth as we have been (Kille). The breakthrough of LED is “potentially one of the biggest advancements in…

affects the operational cost of LED bulbs. The price in the market for an LED bulb is $8. The price is more expensive compared to CFL bulbs. However, this expense is recovered in a long run since LED bulbs consume less energy than CFL bulbs. Only one LED bulb is needed for 25,000 hours of use. The total cost of electricity for the same amount of hours and same rate is $30. In the end, the total operation cost of a 10 watt LED bulb ends up being $38. When comparing the two operational costs,…

Another study has shown that taking electrical devices, like a cell phone, to bed during the night can affect sleeping patterns. The handheld devices emit a blue LED light that tricks the brain into staying awake longer. The brain produces a chemical hormone called melatonin that prepares the body for sleep. The light from the screen however throw a person’s internal clock off and make them stay awake. Why does the blue light keep people up? A study in 2002 found that light signals in our eyes…

I had worked with this patient before in a group setting, but he didn’t appear as receptive to me then as he did today. This patient mentioned enjoying science experiments so I planned two diversional science activities and invited him to the playroom. The first activity we completed was creating a lava lamp with water, vegetable oil, food coloring, and fizzing tablets. The patient thoroughly enjoyed this activity and made an extra one for Mr. Guy as a belated birthday gift. He also displayed…

refrigerator. However, the rise of electricity was fraught with conflict over the type of electrical current. Starting in the 1870’s the fight over electric currents, dubbed the “War of Currents,” featured extensive propaganda, technological innovation, and intense competition. The Westinghouse Electric Company supported the alternating, or AC current, while the Edison Electric Company backed the older and lower-voltage direct, or DC current. While AC won out, the war had significant effects.…
