Williams uses this situation to illustrate that every women in these kinds of situations are powerless, because the men chose to not give them the respect they deserved. Blanche did not move to New Orleans, because she decided to take a leave of absence from teaching, but instead, the town of Laurel kicked her out. In her town, Blanche used to be known as a regular southern woman who taught English at the local high school. After losing the family’s plantation, Blanche started to feel anxious so she started sleeping around. This behavior eventually led her to have relations with a seventeen year old student. Teachers having inappropriate affairs with students is definitely a wrongdoing, but forcing Blanche to quit her job, and leave town was unfair. In scene five, Stella and Stanley’s neighbor Eunice confronted her husband Steve about his infidelity. Steve’s response to her inquiry made it obvious that he was being unfaithful, because he beat his wife out of anger.
