When reading the Interpersonal Communication and Self excerpt, the numerous aspects that go into our identities was overwhelming: attitudes, beliefs, values, roles, subjective and objective self-awareness, symbolic self-awareness, material and social self, spiritual self, and more. With so many layers, it is no wonder we struggle to know our true identities. The Interpersonal Communication and Self (n.d.) chapter states “Your self-image and self-worth, as well as your needs, values, beliefs,…
Freshman student Hayden Grant looked horrified at his schedule, displaying the one class many were horrified of, Belly Dancing. At suburban Stevenson High School, they host a biennial fine arts festival named, “Odyssey”, to meet the Illinois State fine arts requirements for high schools. With over 110 presenters and many more classes to choose from, students are immersed in a variety of presentations and hands-on activities over the course of 2 days. Identity is fluid. Our thoughts, experiences, and feelings are subconsciously pooled together in a homogenous, perpetually altered structure. This glob of thoughts, feelings, and emotions is simultaneously molded by pressures that prolongs throughout life. Despite the momentousness that thoughts, experiences, and feelings influence on the development of identity, they are not the only thing that influences the development of identity. But, equally imperative to the convoluted development of…
People today often perceive beauty as a superficial idea. As Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines it, “beauty is the quality or qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or mind”. In this case, beauty is only defined by physical appearance and attractiveness; it is something that is appealing to the eye at first glance and calculated by physical means. However, beauty should not only be referred to because of one’s physical appearance, rather, it should also be seen…
I live in a world filled with people. They are neurons, not humans. They are the very mechanism by which you think. As one of them, I know what goes on inside your head. We all work together in a network. This is partly the story of how depression changed the interconnected world I live in. My world has a name: Mary. To you, it may be another person, but she is where I live. I am in something you call a brain. To understand how this world works, you need to know what happened when we first…
Journal 30 1. Recently I've felt emotionally overwhelmed with a grade I've received for a math test. I knew everything on the test and I studied the night before, but when I got it, it seemed like my mind went blank. I've realized that I have no chance of getting an “A” at this point and it's really making me upset, and kind of sad. I’m…

Time is a gift many take for granted; a gift many use to their advantage and act like it is nothing at all. Yet there are those who use time wisely, taking caution of every second they use. Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” explains how a memory has the capability to stay with one forever no matter the initial impact, and the truth to that memory. “The Things They Carry,” Tim O’Brien’s war story, talks about how time gives one the ability to realize who one is, through all the…
“I think, therefore I am.” This is one of the most famous statements by Descartes who believes that this is the one thing about which there is no doubt. This also leads to his assumption that free will is self-evident. If one is capable of doubting the existence of things learned through experience even when some of these may be true, then it is obvious that we have the freedom to disbelieve, thus free will. According to Descartes, the mind and body make up a human being. They are two distinct…
