Tell us about you: I’m currently a senior at Tustin High and have been attending there over the last four years. I have been part of the AVID program for the last four years and have gained many useful skills through the program. I was also part of the STEM program throughout my freshman until junior year and have been able to grow more in knowledge because of it. I was able to learn how to use Solidworks, which is a 3D modeling software program. Not only have I learned many useful skills…
I visited the Saint Williams Catholic Community in Shelbyville, TN, on March 5th at the 9:00 bilingual mass. I chose this experience because I have had several Spanish speaking students' in the Pre-K program that I am currently an assistant teacher for. I wanted to better understand the culture of my students, outside of an environment where I am deemed to be dominant. I also wanted to see how different the Catholic church setting is from what I am use to. I have passed this…
Catholic Funeral Customs Human beings are scared of the unknown. We also don’t like to get out of our comfort zone or learn a religion that we do not practice. Those are normal traits for a human being. Here at Shipman Funeral Home we serve families no matter what the level of discomfort or disbelief we may have towards a person’s religion or beliefs. Today at the funeral home we had a family walk in and ask for our services, we later learned this family was Catholic. Jason Shipman the funeral…
The Scarlet and the Black is a 1983 film that follows the efforts of Vatican priest, Monsignor O’Flaherty, as he hides Jews and escaped POWs in Germany occupied Rome in 1943 during World War II. Priest O’Flaherty’s main adversary is SS Head of Police for Rome, Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Kappler. Hundreds of Allied POW soldiers are stealing into the city in hopes of finding refuge within the Vatican walls. When Germany entered Rome, the Vatican declared it’s neutrality in the war with the promise…
For my Service Learning Project I decided to attend mass at a local Catholic church. I am interested in Catholicism as I have a few family members who are Catholic. Plus a significant amount of my classmates in this religion course were Catholic so I wondered what it was all about. I am not that familiar with Catholicism as I have only attended a few masses in my life for baptisms, weddings, funerals and such. I personally was saved in a non-denomination church and have continued to attend a…
In my adolescent years, I went through a couple of struggles before I became a Catholic. I became a Catholic when I was baptized as a little baby but then bad situations occurred and I missed out on being the Catholic I wanted to become as a little girl because my parents stopped taking me to church. As I grew up, I have always felt I had a something missing and I knew it was God’s love. When I hit freshman year in high school I found myself going back to the Catholic church with my Catholic…
Being in a church setting, I did not want to break many norms, or be overly intolerable because I knew that many people would be very upset. From breaking the norms (sitting down while everyone else stood up to sing, texting, ect.) the people got upset, but not upset enough to leave the service. I think if I would have continuously been disruptive and annoying, people would have left, or told me to leave. I thought that it was very interesting that while they sing, they stand up, while at my…
Bodily Movement: The movement within the service was smoothly done. I will acknowledge that there was a great deal happening during the service that required movement. The children’s dance set the tone for the movement to come. I did appreciate that the Rev. Kletzing entered via the center aisle rather from somewhere in the back of the church. The passing of the peace is always a nice opportunity for the people to greet one another. I am of two minds though, is it a nice break for the…
To begin with, rites of terror are rituals that cause intense negative emotions for the people who are about to go through it. The rites of terror are performed in many cultures around the world and there are many reasons why these rituals occur. The main one I would say is to officially integrate the performer into society. The actual terror is what leaves a long lasting memory for the performer so they can remember what they have gone through. In the chapter “Terror” by Harvey Whitehouse he…
Question A: The transition from childhood to adulthood is a very important step in the life of a human being. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. Today, I will be reminiscing the rite of passage of a friend who transitioned from childhood to adulthood. The rite of passage that I witnessed was a Quinceanera, a Quinceanera is a coming of age celebration/ceremony that symbolizes a girls transition from childhood to adulthood/womanhood. The event started with a mass, although I…
