Kyle Busch’s crash at Daytona International Speedway was a rare instance that led to a driver being injured. Kyle Busch broke both legs when his car hit an unprotected wall head on at 90mph. Initially, the SAFER barrier (soft wall technology) was only installed in locations deemed to have a high probability of impacts, such as the outside walls of the corners and parts on the inside walls on straightaways. As reality seemed to prove, a racecar will eventually find and hit any barrier exposed given the time. Busch managed to hit an uncommon part of the inside retaining wall that was angled shallow to allow medical staff to enter and exit the track. The wreck brought rightful criticism, as many argued there should be complete coverage of the SAFER barriers around the walls. In response many tracks, including Daytona installed those barriers in places initially assumed to be unnecessary.
