Many may not consider it cannibalism, however, if one were to take the definition of cannibalism word for word, eating one’s own placenta would be a form of cannibalism known as auto-cannibalism. It is also not looked down upon by society, it even legalized in multiple states. To counter argue cannibalism many use disease to argue against allowing cannibalism to exist in society, the most often disease being Kuru. Kuru is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the cerebellum that is caused by the eating of the brain. Symptoms include slurring of speech, unsteadiness when walking, ataxia, outbursts of laughter (hence “the laughing disease”), and incontinence (Gadjusek 1973 qtd. in McGrath). However, it has a long incubation period of 8-11 years. This rare disease is often used by people to rebuke cannibalism. Yet, it is a rare disease that is contracted by eating the brain of another human. Simply eating people in general does not mean a cannibalist will contract kuru and die. Cannibalism, despite its place in man's deepest nightmares, is not always so and should not be looked down upon simply due to misunderstandings. Cannibalism is used across the world in many societies to increase health, allow the process of grieving to occur, or simply to ward off evil spirits in a tribe.
