    Vista Maria first began as an orphanage by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd over 130 years ago. In 1883, 5 Sisters of the Good Shepherd came to Detroit to the Ward Mansion to establish their first home. As the Industrial Revolution went on, the home turned into 33 Sisters caring for more than 200 girls and young woman. Through the next 30 years, the home named the “House of Good Shepherd expanded their services, however did not have an adequate amount of land to provide these services. The Ford family stepped up and gave the Sisters 50 acres of land on West Warren Avenue in Dearborn Heights for just $1.00. After they were able to begin taking the steps to develop residence halls, a school, a powerhouse, and an auditorium/gymnasium, the House of Good Shepherd reopened the facility on December 8th, 1942 and renamed it Vista Maria. Vista Maria has now evolved to provide abused, neglected, and delenquent adolescent girls with emotional, psychological, spiritual, and educational guidance to facilitate their transition to adulthood as productive and contributing members of society. At the time when the Sisters first developed as an orphanage, their legacy mission was to rescue and restore women and children through providing them innovative care, support, treatment, and education. Through this mission, vulnerable youth would have the ability to heal, believe in their worth, and build skills to be able to succeed in their lives.
